Harness, ID, and leash: A frightened or startled cat is harder to hold onto than a hot frying pan. Make sure that, if yours wriggles out of your grasp, he’s going no farther than the end of a leash. Before you go anywhere, get your cat microchipped, register the chip, and keep the information updated. On the road, use a harness — Dr. Lauren likes soft mesh vest-style harnesses made for small dogs — with an ID tag, and attach a leash to the harness anytime he’s out of the crate.

Be very careful with reel-type leashes. They’re handy for giving pets some air, but they can be difficult to control. Keep an eye on your pet at all times, so no texting or scrolling on your phone since such distractions leave you unprepared for sudden emergencies, such as the arrival of an uncontrolled dog. Honestly, we don’t recommend them, but we know they’re popular. Just be careful!
